About
About the site
Plain Good Farms lists 486 places selling food in 28 states and provinces that are run, or may be run, by Plain families: Amish, Old Order and Conservative Mennonite, and the occasional Hutterite colony.
Who runs this
Plain Good Farms is built and kept up by Jordan Mogck of Happy Toil. Jordan works with a handful of Amish farmers, helping more people find out about the nutrient-dense, regeneratively raised food they grow.
Some of the farms Jordan works with are listed here, on the same terms as everyone else. Nobody pays to be listed or to be listed higher.
Where the listings come from
Most of these families don’t advertise and many have no website. We gather listings from public sources: county and chamber directories, merchant lists from Plain communities, raw milk directories, OpenStreetMap, farm market guides and the like. Each listing links to the sources we used.
We describe what each place sells in our own words, from what the sources tell us. We don’t publish family members’ names, and we don’t include places that sell only furniture, quilts or crafts. This site is about food.
What the marks mean
Not every listing is certain to be Plain-run, and we would rather say so than guess.
- Confirmed (164): the family, a community directory, or a source we trust tells us it’s Plain-run.
- Likely (86): strong signs, such as a Plain community merchant list or a well-known family business, but we haven’t checked it ourselves.
- Possible (236): it turned up in a source about Plain communities, or sells the kind of food these farms sell, but we’re still asking.
Keeping it current
Hours, phone numbers and what’s for sale all change. Each listing shows when we last checked it. If you visit and something’s different, please tell us. If you run the place, you decide what we show, including nothing at all.
Map pins
Where we have a street address, the pin is at the address. Where we only know the town or ZIP code, the pin sits at the middle of town and the listing says the location is approximate. Distances are straight-line miles, so the drive will be longer.
Privacy
No ads, no paid placement, no tracking scripts. To show listings near you, the site uses a rough location worked out from your internet connection by our host, Cloudflare, or your device’s location if you ask it to. That stays in your browser; we don’t store it. If you send us a correction, we keep what you write and a scrambled fingerprint of your connection to stop spam.
Map and place data
Town and ZIP code locations come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s gazetteer files. Maps use Esri’s street map, built partly on OpenStreetMap data.
